Class Approval Drawings & Statutory Documentation

Class approval drawings, calculations and statutory documents for newbuilds, conversions and modifications, prepared to the rules of ABS, DNV, LR, BV, IRS, NK, KR, BKI, RINA and CCS and taken through plan approval on the owner’s or yard’s behalf. Founder experience as an IRS surveyor means the package is written the way the reviewer reads it.

Class Approval Drawings & Statutory Documentation

What you receive

  • Structural drawings and scantling calculations to the applicable class rules
  • Intact and damage stability booklets, loading manual and inclining experiment procedure and report
  • General arrangement, tank plan, capacity plan, fire and safety plans, LSA plans
  • Load line, tonnage and freeboard calculations; SOLAS, MARPOL and flag-state statutory submissions
  • Modification and conversion drawings with rule references for class notation changes
  • Plan-approval correspondence: comment resolution sheets and re-submissions until stamped

Drawing lists per class society

Each society publishes its own list of drawings required for approval, and the structure of the submission differs between, for example, DNV Rules for Ships, ABS Steel Vessel Rules and IRS Rules. We maintain the drawing list per society and per vessel type, so a submission is complete on the first pass. The checklist we use is published on this site as a free resource for yards and owners.

Conversions and modifications

Most of our class work is on vessels that already exist: OSV-to-WSV and barge-to-PLB conversions, deck strengthening for new equipment, davit and crane installations, accommodation additions and notation changes. For these the package is the delta from the approved drawings, with the rule references that justify each change, plus the updated stability and longitudinal strength where lightship has moved. A 200-tonne-steel OSV-to-WSV conversion in Norway and a 4 x 50-tonne davit installation in Nigeria were delivered this way.

Statutory and flag documentation

Where the flag or a recognised organisation requires it we prepare the load line, tonnage, SOLAS and MARPOL documents alongside the class drawings, and coordinate with the surveyor for the inclining experiment and lightship survey. For Indian-flag vessels we work with IRS and the Directorate General of Shipping requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Which classification societies have you submitted drawings to?

ABS, DNV, LR, BV, IRS, NK, KR, BKI, RINA and CCS. The founder previously worked as an assistant surveyor at the Indian Register of Shipping.

Do you handle the plan-approval comments as well as the drawings?

Yes. The scope includes the comment-resolution sheets and re-submissions until the drawings are stamped, and coordination with the attending surveyor for surveys and the inclining experiment.

Can you work from the yard’s or owner’s existing drawings?

Yes. For conversions and modifications we start from the approved drawings and produce the delta package with the rule references that justify each change.
