Inclining experiment (lightship survey)

An inclining experiment measures a vessel’s lightship weight and vertical centre of gravity by shifting known weights across the deck and recording the resulting heel, witnessed by the class or flag surveyor. It is required for newbuilds and after conversions or modifications that change lightship significantly.

Procedure

A calm-water, near-complete vessel with tanks pressed or empty; known weights moved in a sequence of shifts; pendulum or inclinometer readings; a deadweight survey of everything on board; and a report that derives lightship displacement, LCG and VCG for the new stability booklet.
