Class approval, or plan approval, is the classification society’s review and stamping of the drawings and calculations for a vessel, offshore unit, conversion or modification against its rules, before and during construction. Class-approved drawings are a condition of the vessel’s class certificate and, through it, of its insurance and flag compliance.
Structural drawings and scantling calculations, stability booklets and loading manual, general arrangement and safety plans, machinery and piping diagrams, electrical single-line diagrams, and for conversions the delta drawings with rule references. Each society publishes its own drawing list.
